Sandra Nahornoff - Wildlife Artist

Biography

Photography and painting wildlife has become a way of expressing the deep appreciation and pleasure I feel for the natural world around me. Participating in outdoor adventures photographing Canada's wildlife, birds and nature, Russia's brown bears, Japan's gardens, climbing mountains, riding horses, camping, hunting and angling has created a unique understanding of the world, and has helped me acquire a vast array of reference material for my artwork.

Oil painting has resulted in winning two BC Wildlife Artist of the Year competitions for the "McGregor Mountain Grizzlies" in 2003, the "Rocky Mountain Grizzlies" in 2006, a place in the Ducks Unlimited Canadian National Art Portfolio for the "Knight of the Lake" in 2006, and being inducted into the Prince George & District Community Arts Council's 2007 Arts Gallery of Honour for Visual Arts. I've been donating artwork throughout Canada since 1995 via the BC Wildlife Federation, Spruce City Wildlife Association, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Project Friendship Society and many other groups, to raise funds for conservation and to support the integration of people with special needs, who I teach to paint. My commitment to conservation has taken me into the field, volunteering untold hours on fish and wildlife projects.

My art experience encompasses other mediums from drawing, painting with watercolour and oils, to sculpting. My subject matter includes my love of wildlife and nature, but also includes flowers and birds, pets and people, and fantasy. I'm a past president of the Artist Co-op Workshop & Gallery in Prince George where I've taught art since 1997. I'm very excited about our permanent move to Francois Lake, where I recently completed my art studio, and where I will be pursuing some new art projects and providing art instruction.
